Military plane crashes into San Diego Bay

Two pilots flying a military plane have been rescued taken to the hospital after the aircraft crashed into the water near Shelter Island in San Diego, California, according to fire officials.

San Diego Fire said the crash was reported at 10:16 a.m. local time, and that the military confirmed at 10:42 a.m. that only two pilots were aboard the plane.

No fatalities were reported, and the two pilots were taken to a nearby medical center for treatment, according to the San Diego Fire. The department did not disclose the pilots' current medical conditions.

Pilots in stable condition after being underwater for a minute

The U.S. Navy told local media outlets KUSI and KGTV the plane was a Boeing EA-18G Growler. The U.S. Coast Guard said the pilots were in stable condition after they were underwater for one minute, according to KGTV.

USA TODAY reached out to the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard on Wednesday but did not immediately receive a response.

NASA: Asteroid may hit the moon instead of Earth

An asteroid originally thought to have a higher chance of colliding with Earth might instead strike the Moon, according to new calculations.

NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) had previously estimated that asteroid 2024 YR4 had a 2.3% chance of hitting Earth in 2032, up from about 1%.

However, recent data from University of Arizona astronomer David Rankin suggests a much slimmer 0.3% chance that the 90-meter-wide asteroid could impact the Moon.

The Moon’s lack of an atmosphere means that if the asteroid were to collide, it could create a crater several hundred meters wide, potentially sending debris into space.

Some of this debris could return to Earth, although scientists believe the risk of any major threat is minimal. "There is a possibility that some material could hit Earth, but I highly doubt it would cause any significant harm," Dr. Rankin told New Scientist.

The trajectory of 2024 YR4 remains uncertain, as it was first spotted on December 27 last year. NASA continues to study the asteroid, and scientists expect that future data could further reduce its chances of hitting Earth. "There have been several objects in the past that were initially flagged as high risk and later removed from the list as more data came in," NASA said, adding that new observations might eventually reassign the asteroid a risk rating of zero.

In the meantime, global space agencies are exploring ways to prevent potential collisions with hazardous asteroids like 2024 YR4. Some proposed methods include sending spacecraft to deflect the asteroid or using nuclear blasts to change its course. China has recently joined international efforts, announcing new positions for a "planetary defense post" to help monitor asteroids. Li Mingtao, a researcher at China's National Space Science Center, emphasized the importance of developing a dedicated asteroid defense team. China also revealed plans to launch a mission around 2030 to study and possibly alter the path of an asteroid.

The asteroid 2024 YR4 will pass by Earth again in 2028, providing more opportunities for scientists to refine their predictions and better understand the likelihood of an impact in 2032.

Patrick Mahomes’ Dad and Former MLB Pitcher John Rocker Get in Fight

The retired MLB aces interaction on Bourbon Street could be a preview of a future boxing match between the two

It was a pitchers’ duel in the Big Easy — or was it all staged to promote a future boxing match?

In a Barstool Sports video shared to social media, Patrick Mahomes Sr. and John Rocker, former MLB aces, nearly came to fisticuffs while interacting along Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

In the clip, the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes refused Rocker’s handshake greeting after the latter emerged from a bar with a drink in hand.

The retired athletes began yelling at one another while those in their parties tried to separate the two.

“What are you talking about?” Rocker, 50, could be heard saying at one point in the altercation.

On Tuesday, the former Atlanta Braves reliever and the former Texas Rangers pro each responded to the video.

“This f---ing loser can't take a damn joke,” Rocker wrote and reposted the video. “Wish I laid him out right there and ruined his bulls--- weekend even more.”

“John Rocker is a menace to society,” Mahomes, 54, pushed back.

It was not immediately made clear when the video was taken. On Sunday, Feb. 9, the Philadelphia Eagles stunned the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl 2025.

The scuffle comes amid speculation that the two could be meeting inside the boxing ring soon.

In an interview in New Orleans, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy confirmed that he wasn’t “100% sure” but that Rocker and Mahomes Sr. may face off in a “Rough ‘N’ Rowdy” boxing event sponsored by the company.

The prospective match comes after a difficult year for Mahomes Sr., who served a 10-day jail sentence in October 2024 after pleading guilty to his third charge of driving while intoxicated (DWI) on Feb. 3, 2024, just days before his son won a third Super Bowl for the Chiefs.

Rocker notably drew headlines in 1999 when he made a series of disparaging and racist comments in a Sports Illustrated interview.

California State University cancels in-person classes for fall

California's state university system, the largest in the United States, canceled classes on Tuesday for the fall semester because of the coronavirus pandemic, while Los Angeles County said its stay-at-home order was likely to be extended by three months.

The announcements on the West Coast came after the country's top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, told Congress that lifting the sweeping lockdowns could touch off new outbreaks of COVID-19, which has killed nearly 81,000 Americans and devastated the economy.

"Our university, when opening without restrictions and fully in person, as is the traditional norm of the past, is a place where more than 500,000 people come together in close and vibrant proximity with each other on a daily basis," Chancellor Timothy White said in a statement.

"That approach, sadly, just isn't in the cards now."

Los Angeles County Health Director Barbara Ferrer added her own grim forecast, saying stay-at-home curbs for 10 million residents, including the city of Los Angeles, would probably remain in place, in some form, for another three months.

"While the Safer at Home orders will remain in place over the next few months, restrictions will be gradually relaxed," under a planned reopening of the local economy as the outbreak ebbs, she said.

Her remarks came after California Governor Gavin Newsom said restaurants in parts of the state could again begin allowing diners inside under modified conditions and outdoor shopping malls could be permitted to open for curbside pickup.

Offices in parts of California can also open with some limitations, Newsom told a daily news briefing. But his latest plan for restarting the world's fifth-largest economy keeps nail salons, tattoo parlors, and fitness clubs closed.

"It's a mistake to overpromise what re-opening means," said Newsom, a Democrat who was the first governor to issue statewide stay-at-home orders and has been more cautious in relaxing them than counterparts in other states.

Earlier, Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told a US Senate panel that prematurely ending restrictions on commerce and social life could have dire consequences.

"I think we're going in the right direction, but the right direction does not mean we have by any means total control of this outbreak," Fauci said during the three-and-a-half-hour hearing.

He urged states to follow health experts' recommendations to wait for clear signs of improvement, such as a significant decline in new infections, before reopening.

"There is a real risk that you will trigger an outbreak that you may not be able to control and, in fact, paradoxically, will set you back, not only leading to some suffering and death that could be avoided but could even set you back on the road to try to get economic recovery," Fauci said.

The COVID-19 respiratory disease caused by the new virus has already infected more than 1.3 million Americans and killed at least 80,976, according to a Reuters tally.

That toll is projected to climb significantly in the coming months.

The latest forecast from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is for more than 147,000 deaths from COVID-19 by early August, up nearly 10,000 from the last projection, as social distancing is increasingly relaxed, researchers said.

Broadway actor Nick Cordero wakes from coma

A Broadway actor who had his right leg amputated while fighting Covid-19 has woken up from a medically induced coma, his wife has revealed.

Amanda Kloots said it was "a miracle" that husband Nick Cordero was on the road to recovery.

The Canadian actor, who was nominated for a Tony Award for the Bullets Over Broadway musical, has been in hospital in Los Angeles since the end of March.

Kloots has been posting regular updates about the 41-year-old's condition.

A fundraiser set up to support the couple and their young son Elvis has raised more than $500,000 (£407,000).

Cordero was initially admitted to hospital on 30 March after being diagnosed with pneumonia and later tested positive for coronavirus.

According to his wife, he went into septic shock while in hospital, had two "mini-strokes" and had blood clotting complications that resulted in his leg being amputated.

Speaking on Instagram on Tuesday, Kloots said her husband was "extremely weak" but was "following commands which mean his mental status is coming back".

Cordero's other theatre credits include stints in Waitress, Rock of Ages, and the musical version of A Bronx Tale.

Khloe Kardashian not pregnant with Tristan's baby

Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson do NOT have another bun in the oven, despite lots of speculation otherwise ...

While rumors and reports started swirling Wednesday morning saying Khloe was pregnant with the NBA star's child, our sources tell us that's not the case.

Sources close to Khloe tell AMpmFUN ... she is NOT pregnant and the rumor mill started simply because eagle-eyed fans noticed she was posting a lot of pink flowers recently, which they mistook as a sign of another daughter on the horizon.

Fans also noted a lot of the photos and videos Khloe's been posting on social media are from the waist up or throwback pics ... but we're told it's not a sign she's actually expecting.

As you know ... Khloe and Tristan have one child together already, True Thompson, who recently celebrated her 2nd birthday.

It sounds like things are good between Khloe and TT, even though they don't live under the same roof ... our sources say they've been seeing each other from time to time during Cali's stay-at-home order because of their daughter, and the family celebrated Mother's Day together.

Khloe's still a mother of one ... and that's not changing any time soon.

WWE superstar Becky Lynch announces pregnancy

WWE superstar Becky Lynch will have a new challenge to grapple with later this year -- parenthood.

Lynch, 33, whose real name is Rebecca Quin, is one of the top attractions in World Wrestling Entertainment and is the longest-reigning women’s champion in the WWE’s Raw division, holding the belt for 398 days, ESPN reported. On “Raw,” a weekly pro wrestling show, Lynch announced she and fiance Seth Rollins are expecting their first child in December, People reported.

Lynch, in an emotional segment of the show, said she was giving up her title, which will now go to Asuka, who won Sunday night’s Money in the Bank match.

“You go and be a warrior, 'cause I’m gonna go be a mother," Lynch said before embracing Asuka.

“I’ve always, always wanted kids,” Lynch told People. “I’m just so career-focused that it became one of those things that, when you’re chasing a dream for so long, I always wondered, ‘Am I going to get around to it? Is it going to happen for me?’”

Lynch, a native of Limerick, Ireland, began wrestling for the WWE promotion in 2013. She won the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championship belts in 2019 when she beat Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair in a Triple Threat match at WrestleMania 35, CNN reported. It was the first women’s match ever to headline WWE’s biggest annual event.

Lynch and Rollins, 33, went public with their relationship in May 2019 and announced their engagement three months later, People reported.

Lynch, whose nickname in WWE is “The Man” because of her stature as champion, posted an emotional message on social media.

“I have no idea what happens from here, but I do know that you’ve made all my dreams come true,” Lynch tweeted Monday night. “I entered the PC in 2013 not knowing anyone, I’ll leave that same building tonight with my new family. Thank you all so much.”

Why Your Coronavirus Stimulus Check Isn’t Here Yet

Nearly a month after IRS deposited the first round of coronavirus stimulus checks into Americans’ bank accounts, Uncle Sam still hasn’t paid everyone what they’re due. As of last Friday, the IRS had sent out 130 million payments of roughly $200 billion. That leaves some 20 million U.S. residents waiting for their cut of relief funds. Here’s a quick primer on who is entitled to relief under Congress’s recently passed CARES Act, why you might not have received your check yet, and what you can do to make sure the IRS eventually gives you what you’re owed.

Who is eligible for a stimulus check (and how large should that check be)?

If you file your taxes as an individual and earned less than $75,000 a year (as measured by adjustable gross income), you are entitled to a $1,200 check. Those who earned between $75,000 and $99,000 are still entitled to some relief. But the dollar value of their checks will decline by $5 for every $100 they earned above $75,000.

If you file your taxes as a married couple (or are married and do not file taxes) and earned less than $150,000, then you’re eligible for a $2,400 check. As with individuals, those who earned between $150,000 and $198,00 are still entitled to some relief, but the size the check declines as your income goes up.

If you are unmarried but file your taxes as head of your household, you should get the full $1,200 check so long as you earned below $112,500. Those who earned under $136,500 will receive checks of lesser value.

Finally, families who earned less than the income cap are entitled to a $500 payment for each child in their care.

Why some eligible Americans still haven’t received their checks (and what they can do about it).

Congress put the IRS in charge of dispersing the coronavirus relief payments, and the IRS can distribute those payments most easily to Americans who have already provided the agency with their banking information in order to receive a tax refund as a direct deposit. Thus, the first round of payments was issued to the subset of eligible Americans who requested and received direct-deposit tax refunds in 2018 and/or 2019.

According to a CBS MoneyWatch analysis of IRS numbers, West Virginia has seen the highest percentage of taxpayers receive their stimulus and New Jersey has seen the lowest. That discrepancy, CBS notes, “likely comes down to residents’ income, tax filing status and bank account information.”

The best bet for those hoping to get a check sooner rather than later is to enter their bank account information on the IRS’s “Get My Payment” tool. The deadline to do so is Wednesday at 12 p.m. For those who miss the deadline or prefer paper checks, relief will start arriving later this month, the IRS said. “Afternoon Wednesday, the IRS will begin preparing millions of files to send to (the Bureau of Fiscal Services) for paper checks that will begin arriving through late May and into June,” the agency said in a press release Friday.

Why you may be getting the message “Payment Status Not Available” when trying to use the IRS’s “Get My Payment” tool.

Many Americans have reported getting this frustrating message when attempting to check on the status of their aid checks. The Washington Post last month reached out to the IRS about the problem, which told the paper that users could hit this wall for any of the following reasons:

• You aren’t eligible for a payment.

• Your payment is based on your status as a Social Security, disability, Veterans Affairs, or Railroad Retirement beneficiary.

• In this case, the IRS will use your SSA or RRB Form 1099 payment information.

• Your payment information isn’t available on the “Get My Payment” tool.

• You have not filed a 2018 or 2019 federal tax return. You filed your 2019 return, but it hasn’t been fully processed.

• You used the non-filers tool, but the information you entered is still being processed. There’s a problem verifying your identity when answering the security questions.

Some suggestions for getting past this problem include typing your address in all caps, using periods after abbreviations in your address, and finding an old tax return to ensuring you’re typing in the same address that IRS used to mail your return.

Why your check may have been too small.

If you are a parent or guardian who receives Social Security retirement, survivors, disability, or SSI benefits, you may have received a $1,200 boost to your benefits but no accompanying $500 payment for each of your children. In order to access those child benefits, you will need to use the tool for non-filers at IRS.gov and input the Social Security number or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number of each of your dependents.

You can find more information about the CARES Act’s other relief programs, including those aimed at small businesses and the unemployed, here and here.
